You must be able to read and understand English. All courses and examinations are proctored only in English.

The following is a list of required Performance Standards and Assessments for Basic Training Classes. Candidates must pass the assessments to receive a completion certificate and will have two further attempts within 90 days to complete any incomplete portion to receive a completion certificate.

The candidate demonstrates proper donning of all the following equipment in 3 minutes:

1. Flash hood,
2. Turnout pants and boots;
3. Turnout coat;
4. Helmet, and
5. Gloves

Tread water remain afloat without aid for at least 1 minute.

Don a lifesaving PFD in 1 minute, properly fitted, positioned, and secured.

Don an immersion suit in 2 minutes, properly fitted, positioned, and secured.

Successfully right an inverted life raft and complete all the following within 10 minutes:

1. Swim to boarding ramp;
2. Grab boarding straps;
3. Kick legs while pulling self into raft; and
4. Board raft

Please Note: This course requires that you participate in practical assessments. On the last day of the course you will be getting into the swimming pool. You will need to bring a change of clothes, towel and a light jacket. Thank you.
