Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) – Alameda, CA

Our U.S. Coast Guard approved OUPV course meets the written examination requirement for a National Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels license only. The OUPV license allows you to operate an uninspected vessel with six or less paying passengers, in U.S. waters only.

Course subjects include:

  • Rules of the Road, International and Inland
  • Deck General, Code of Federal Regulations
  • Navigation General including Aids to Navigation
  • Chart Plotting Navigation

 

This course is held during three consecutive weekends: Friday Evenings (5:00 PM- 9:00 PM), Saturdays (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM), and Sundays (8:00 AM – 5:00 PM). The course has approx. 2-5 hours of homework daily. Final examinations are taken in-class on the last day of class.

 

Course materials required:

Upon registering, we will mail you the following required books for this course with instructions on what to study: (3) TRLMI OUPV Course textbooks, and (1) U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Rules & Regulations Handbook also known as the “Rules of the Road” handbook. We highly advise that students register for this course at least one month in advance to allow adequate time to study and review these books in advance.

You will be loaned the following required tools in-class for the duration of the course: A set of plotting tools that includes a roll plotter, triangle, compass/dividers, a basic non-programmable calculator, and our navigational study aid “Mariner’s Guide to Rules of the Road.”  These tools will all be loaned to you during class, but you are welcome to bring your own or purchase them from TRLMI to keep.
