Able Seaman (ABLEONL) Online

Successfully completing TRLMI’s USCG-Approved Able Seaman course satisfies the examination and Marlinspike Seamanship demonstration requirements of 46 CFR 12.405 for any National Able Seaman endorsement. The course certificate received upon successfully completing this course must be submitted to the USCG National Maritime Center within one (1) year of the date on the certificate. This course does not satisfy any sea service requirements. This course does not satisfy additional training requirements such as Lifeboatman/PSC.

The materials for this Able Seaman Online Course are fully online. There are no printed course books nor handouts.

The level of Able Seaman rating that you apply for from the USCG National Maritime Center, is dependent upon several factors of your qualifying sea service including: total number of days, size of vessels served on, and waters operated on.

Class Requirements:

After registering, you will receive access to the Online Portal within 2-3 business days via email.
You have up to 8 weeks to complete the online course starting on the date that TRLMI sends you your course log-in email. THERE ARE NO EXTENSIONS past this 8-week time frame.

Final exams for this course are proctored IN-PERSON. When you are finished with the online Able Seaman course you will schedule with us to take your proctored USCG Approved final exams at one of our approved locations. Our online course final exam testing locations are currently only in: Alameda and San Diego, California; Norfolk, VA; Honolulu, Hawaii. Appointments are scheduled based on our exam proctor availability. Upon successful completion of the exams, you will receive a Certificate of Training for this course that is valid for one (1) year to be submitted to the USCG to apply for the national Able Seaman rating.
