Able Seafarer-Engine (ASE) – San Diego, CA

TRLMI’s Able Seafarer-Engine Course provides training required for candidates desiring to obtain a U.S. Coast Guard endorsement as Able Seafarer-Engine (AS-E). Any person completing the Able Seafarer-Engine course will satisfy the approved training requirements of 46 CFR 12.607(a)(3)(ii); AND the competency requirements of 46 CFR 12.607(a)(4) AND be credited for all assessments of the Able Seafarer-Engine in NVIC 18-14 as long as the individual has completed the assessments as a RFPEW.

The USCG requires the following in addition to the training:

Meet the requirements of an endorsement as a Rating Forming Part of an Engineering (RFPEW). It is not necessary to hold the endorsement for RFPEW, but all training, sea service and/or assessments required for RFPEW must be completed before accruing the sea service for AS-E.
While qualified as a RFPEW must provide evidence of a minimum of six months (vice the 12 months required without this training) sea service in the engine department.
Meet the standard of competence specified in Table A-III/5 of the STCW Code by completing the assessments in Enclosure (2) of NVIC 18-14 which will be demonstrated in this course with the exception of Task numbers 1.1A through 2.2A which are accomplished by completing the endorsement as Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch.
Have a current valid Basic Training endorsement (46 CFR 12.602).

Standards of Competence

TRLMI’s USCG Approved 5 day course includes theory and written examinations towards the issuance of a qualified rating on your merchant mariners credential as Able Seafarer-Engine.

Any individual successfully completing the TRLMI Able Seafarer-Engine course of instruction will be credited for all assessments as an Able Seafarer-Engine in NVIC 18-14 as long as the individual has completed the assessments as a RFPEW.

What You Will Learn

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have the training and have demonstrated practical assessments ensuring successful achievement of the level of competence and knowledge, understanding and proficiency specified in Table A-II/5 of the STCW Code.

The following subjects will be presented:

Knowledge and Function of:

Fuel Systems and oil transfer operations
Safe function operation and maintenance of the bilge and ballast systems

Safe operation of:

Valves and pumps
Hoisting and lifting equipment, hatches, watertight door
Electrical equipment including emergency procedures

Ability to use:

Painting, lubricating and cleaning materials and equipment
Surface preparation techniques

Knowledge and safe:

Disposal of waste
Metal work
Operation and safe use of power hand tools
Safe handling and securing of stores
Precautions to be taken to prevent pollution of the marine environment
Use and operation of anti-pollution equipment
Approved methods for disposal of marine pollution
Working practices and personal shipboard safety including electrical safety

Working knowledge of safe working practices and personnel shipboard safety including:

Electrical safety
Lockout/tagout procedures
Mechanical safety
Permit to work systems
Working aloft
Working in enclosed spaces
Lifting techniques and methods of preventing back injury
Chemical and bio hazard safety
Personal safety equipment

Class Requirements:

Mariner must hold a national endorsement as QMED, entry level is not considered the appropriate national endorsement.

* Any Unlicensed Rating In The Engine Department will convert to QMED and is acceptable

* Licensed Engineer Officer’s without QMED is not acceptable.
